5 Cafes For Craft Beer

Since 2011, Singapore has been blessed with an astounding variety of cafes- there is literally one on every corner. Caffeine addicts (such as myself) don’t have to settle for a certain colonising American chain, but can choose to enjoy coffee at a more personal and characteristic café. New cafes keep appearing continuously with amazing cakes and aromatic cuppas, but there is another brew that can only make the café experience even better – craft beer. Get the best of both worlds at these 5 spots.

The Hangar

There are several reasons why you should drop by for a refill of beer and/or coffee. Firstly, the coffee is great and the guys behind the counter are exceptionally friendly. This is usually reason enough for me, but you should definitely make it a point to try their specials, such as the slow cooked lamb sanger with Spanish onions and feta. This is best enjoyed with a Mountain Goat beer. This hightail ale comes from Australia and combines harmoniously with the meaty delight. You can also find some rare German lagers and special brews from Down Under.

Two Bakers

This café is the latest edition to the Jalan Besar neighbourhood. As the concentration of cafes in the area rises, the Two Baker café stands out from the crowd with their delicious looking and gently crafted sweets, pies and cakes. However, there are also hearty treats such as mouth-watering luncheon fries or pork sandwiches. All goes just well with a Dutch or Belgian craft brew- which they have plenty of. The Two Bakers café is just ideal for a long weekend lunch that includes coffee and sweets, starters, an energetic meal and naturally, a craft beer.

Craftsmen Speciality Coffee

Over on the East Coast sits the Craftsmen Speciality Coffee and brings a wide selection of coffees from around the world to the table. If you find it all a little overwhelming, the baristas are happy to introduce you to the different flavours. Their craft beer shelf isn’t bad either. Next to the all-time favourite Brew Dog stands the Belgium St. Premium Kriek and Wychwood’s Ginger Beard beer. Try the latter with the café’s quiche- we’ve tried and tested it.

Fresh Fruits Lab

The experiments with fruits are obviously the highlight on Changi Road, but one mustn’t forget their burgers, sandwiches and hearty meals. Created with the most arresting flavours, their menu makes for an amazing meal everytime. It’s not just the food too- the beer menu is pretty spectacular too. Think labels like Magic Hat Pistil, Wittekerke Belgium Wheat Ale, Cornish Apple Cider, Amerikaans and more.

Group Therapy Coffee

Let’s get it out of the way immediately: Thatchers Katy Apple Cider, Coedo Beniaka, Trappistes Rochefort 8, Brothers Toffee Apple Cider and other pleasures. No matter whether you have sunnyside-ups, truffled ravioli or a beef shank stew – there will be a beer to go with. Don’t forget to stop by next time you are around Duxton Road!
